In September, as early spring arrives in Australia, it's an excellent time to plant a variety of vegetables that will thrive as the weather warms up. Here are some popular options:
Capsicums (Bell Peppers): Capsicums love warm weather and need a long growing season, so planting them in early spring gives them plenty of time to mature before summer. Start seeds indoors if it's still cool, then transplant them into the garden once the soil has warmed up. Growing Capsicum | Australian Gardening Guide
Cucumbers: Cucumbers thrive in warm weather and are a popular choice for summer salads. Planting them now allows them to establish before the hotter months. They can be grown vertically on trellises to save space and improve air circulation. How to Grow Cucumbers in Australia
Basil: Ideal for planting in September, basil loves warm weather and will flourish as the season progresses! Basil can take as little as 4 to 6 weeks to harvest from seed so it’s an excellent choice for beginner gardeners as well. See our full basil guide here!

In September, as spring unfolds across Australia, there are several essential gardening tasks that can help ensure a healthy and vibrant garden for the warmer months ahead. Here are some key activities:
Planting: September is the ideal time to plant warm-season veggies like tomatoes, capsicums, and zucchinis. It's also great for sowing herbs like basil, coriander, and parsley.
Weeding and Lawn Care: Start mowing your lawn more regularly and consider feeding it with a spring lawn fertiliser to encourage lush growth. Weeds also begin to thrive in spring, competing with your plants for nutrients, water, and sunlight. Regularly weed and tidy your garden beds and pathways and consider applying mulch to suppress weed growth and retain soil moisture. How to Mow the Lawn Like a Pro
Final Spring Soil Prep: Healthy soil is the foundation of a productive garden. Dig in compost or well-rotted manure to improve soil structure and fertility. This is especially important before planting new veggies and flowers. Remember to also fertilise any plants entering a phase of active growth. 9 Best Slow-Release Garden Fertilisers 2024
Plant New Plants: September is an ideal time to plant a wide range of new plants. Plant new trees, shrubs, and flowering plants. Make sure to water them well after planting and mulch around the base to help them establish.
Remove Winter Damage: Now is a fantastic time to get rid of any winter damage on your existing plants. Prune away any frost-damaged growth from winter to ensure healthy new growth heading into spring!
Watering Adjustments: As the weather warms up, it’s important to adjust your watering schedule. Early morning watering is best to avoid evaporation and reduce the risk of fungal diseases.
